Oriental Mindoro Eyes Economic Growth Through the IT-BPM Industry

Mindoro, Philippines – The Oriental Mindoro ICT Council held its first special meeting to discuss the province’s economic future. Set at the Sangguniang Panlalawigan Board Room, Batasang Panlalawigan Bldg., in Camilmil, Calapan City last June 15, 2016, the group highlighted the impending need to intensify the province’s trade and industry landscape.mindoro_3.jpg

As per Mr. Morris V. Agudo, Executive Director of the Oriental Mindoro ICT Council, underemployment rose by 20.8% in September of 2015.  Out of this alarming data, it was further conferred there is at least one wasted talent for every 5 jobs as employees are either overqualified for their current jobs, or are currently in part-time jobs but are looking for full-time work.

Participated in by industry leaders, the academe, and other government agencies, an agenda was set to measure steps towards growth by inviting the IT-BPM and BPO Industries to invest in the province.  TeleDevelopment Services shared its expertise in planning cost estimates for setting up shared services, marketing and promotion, and training.  It also presented the Versant Product and its critical role in language assessment and development.

In a parallel role, Zoe Diaz De Rivera, QCCI Manager & Master Trainer of IBPAP discussed SMP and the Global Competitiveness Assessment Tool (GCAT). The goal is to transform Mindoro into an ICT Center as such the ICT Council is looking at opportunities in the following outsourced fields:

  • Game Development
  • Medical
  • Accounting
  • Copywriting
  • IT
  • Engineering

To realize these goals, the conference highlighted on preparing the province and its resources to comply with global standards. Among their plans is to sponsor a workshop with the assistance of the Department of Science and Technology called the CapDev Workshop – a multi-stakeholder approach which they formulated as MAGIC (Media, Academe, Government, Industry, and Community). Government agency partners who were present during the meeting and will play a pivotal part in this endeavor are:

Industry leaders, the government, and the academe are working hand in hand to formulate the strategy of developing Mindoro and its talents. “Who were, who are, and who will be” – are the parting words from the conference’s presenter.
